Prize money will be dished out for the first time at the world amateur boxing championships, with a total of 2.6 million dollars available at the upcoming Belgrade event.
The ruling body AIBA said on Thursday that each champion at the October 24-November 6 worlds will receive $100,000, the runners-up $50,000 and the two semi-finals losers 25,000 dollars each.
“This money is well-deserved taking into account the years of preparations required to earn a place at AIBA’s top tournament and the efforts made. We know this development will be a major benefit for our boxers,” AIBA president Umar Kremlev said.
Secretary general Istvan Kovacs said: “AIBA provides its athletes a fair chance to earn a living as well as to have extra motivation. I know how much these possibilities mean for boxers ... It’s a big step toward our big goal to build a sustainable boxing pathway.” AIBA have landed Russian energy sector giant Gazprom as a main sponsor after Kremlev’s election.
The news comes the day after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in an open letter voiced grave concern over AIBA’s failure to oversee wide-ranging reforms in governance, finance and refereeing.
AIBA was suspended in May 2019 for failures in the three areas and qualifying for the boxing events at the recent Tokyo Olympic Games were organized by an IOC taskforce.
AIBA said that “wide-ranging reforms are already underway ... including all the areas mentioned by the IOC and more.”
