Some of Doha’s popular landmarks have been lit up with Mexico’s national colours for the first time on Thursday as the country marked its National Day.
The landmarks included the façade of the Sheraton Hotel on the Corniche, the Torch Tower Doha in Aspire Zone and the Khalifa International Stadium where, within the vicinity, the Mexican community in Qatar led by Ambassador HE Graciela Gomez Garcia gathered for an official ceremony to commemorate the occasion.
The event also served as the kick-off of the Embassy of Mexico’s countdown to prepare for the much-awaited 2022 FIFA World Cup which is expected to be witnessed by tens of thousands of Mexicans.
Addressing the community, the envoy thanked the Qatar government for the historic tribute to the thriving Mexican population in the country working across sectors, including in aviation, oil and gas, education, sports, fashion, media and in executive positions in Qatari companies.
She said, “It is my great honour to be with you tonight to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Consummation of the Independence of Mexico and the 211th of the beginning of this struggle. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, as well as the directors of Aspire Zone, Aspire Logistics and Public Domain, for their invaluable support to make it possible for the Mexican community to gather here at the most emblematic date for us Mexicans who live abroad and find ourselves thinking of our families and missing our country. Let us remember that ‘Mexico begins where a Mexican is’, and here in Qatar, our country is present and it is being seen and heard as never before.”
Ambassador Gomez Garcia also stressed that the display of Mexico’s national colours in some of Qatar’s iconic buildings is a gesture of friendship from Qatar that is received by Mexico as a precious gift and with gratitude and humility.
She highlighted the anticipation and excitement of Mexicans, along with the rest of the world, for the world’s biggest football tournament to be hosted for the first time in the Middle East.
“Next year, the eyes of the whole world will be on this beautiful country for the FIFA World Cup. We are anticipating that our National Team will have a wonderful performance in the tournament and hence it is important that we are gathering tonight at the football epicentre of Qatar, the historic Khalifa Stadium, amidst the true heart of 2022. Starting tonight, the members of the Mexican community are warming up and taking the countdown to the greatest football event in the world”, the envoy remarked.
“On Mexico’s National Day and with 430 days to go, we send a welcoming message to the football fans in Mexico who are planning to visit us in 2022. Your Embassy, the home of all Mexicans in Qatar, will be there to support you where you need it and when you need it and our thriving community in Qatar will be your hosts as well. Because Mexico starts wherever the Mexicans are, we are here in Doha thinking of you.”
The event also featured performances of Mexican folk dances showcasing the rich heritage of Mexico.
