In Africa, only 3.6 percent of the population have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, despite parts of the continent being already in the grip of a fourth infection wave.
Countries in the north of the continent such as Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia are particularly hard hit, but also states such as Benin in the West Africa and Kenya and Somalia in East Africa.
“We’re not out of the woods yet,” John Nkengasong of the African Union’s health organization, The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said on Thursday. He stressed that Africa was still desperately in need of more vaccines.
However, the trend in new infection numbers is now clearly pointing downwards. Compared to last week, it fell by 20 per cent, and the number of deaths by 26 per cent.
According to the CDC, a total of about 8 million infections have been documented in Africa to date, of which more than 204,000 were fatal.
This corresponds to a share of 4.4 per cent of deaths reported worldwide. However, experts believe that the actual death toll for the 1.3-billion-strong continent is probably much higher.
