Dr Soha Al Bayat, Head of the Vaccination Department at the Ministry of Public Health, has said that all members of society are among the target groups to take the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“The priority is for the elderly and those with chronic diseases and the front line workers in tackling the virus,” Dr Al Bayat told Qatar TV.
The announcement by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) to give booster doses of the vaccines is considered the beginning of a new phase of the national vaccination programme.
She said that doses of the approved vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) in the country will be given as booster dozes, and those who received the second dose of the vaccine more than eight months ago are eligible to take the jab. She said the booster dose has proven to be safe and effective and will not have different side effects from the first and second dose.
Dr Al Bayat, in a Twitter post, said it is safe for people to receive the seasonal influenza and COVID-1 9 vaccines at the same time.
“Clinical evidences have shown that it is safe for people to receive the seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time. The latest clinical evidence shows there is no increased risk of side effects when having the two vaccine at the same time and it does not affect the efficacy of either vaccine,” she said.
Dr Al Bayat added, “This is good news for people at high-risk of severe COVID-1 9 infection who are eligible for their COVID-1 9 vaccine booster dose. These individuals can safely receive their COVID-1 9 booster vaccine and annual influenza vaccine at the same appointment.”
