Unknown assailants free 240 inmates in attack on Nigerian jail

Lagos: Unknown assailants freed 240 prisoners from a jail in the West African country of Nigeria during a deadly overnight attack. The prison in the town of Kabba in the central state of Kogi was attacked by several heavily armed men during the night, prison spokesperson Francis Enobore told dpa on Monday. Only 54 of the inmates were unable to escape, he said. Two correctional officers were killed during the attack, Enobore said. Authorities were searching for the escaped inmates, he said.  Attacks on correctional facilities are a regular occurrence in Africa’s most populous nation. (dpa)
