The Alzheimer’s Indonesia (ALZI) Chapter Qatar, in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Doha, Dharma Wanita Persatuan and the Indonesian Community Association in Qatar (PERMIQA), on Saturday organised a brain exercise in commemoration of World Alzheimer’s Day which falls on September 21.
The activity was attended by around 20 Indonesian community representatives in Qatar and carried out outdoors at Wisma Duta in accordance with the applicable health protocols.
The event was attended by Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar HE Ridwan Hassan, Coordinator of ALZI Chapter Qatar Dr Kennia, Head of Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) Lita Hassan and President of the Indonesian Diaspora Network Global (IDN Global) Kartini Sarsilinaningsih.
“This brain exercise activity is held to raise awareness about dementia or what is known among the general public as senile,” said Lita Hassan, who is also the initiator of the event. According to Lita. “Not many people know and understand the symptoms and the ways to prevent dementia. According to the 2015 World Alzheimer Report, two out of three people worldwide do not know what dementia is.”
Meanwhile the number and the impact of dementia or memory loss cannot be underestimated. According to WHO Global Status Report 2021, in every three seconds, someone in the world develops dementia.
According to the same source, by 2050, it is estimated that 139 million people worldwide will be living with dementia. A very big number that should be taken seriously.
In Indonesia, it is estimated that there are 1.2 million people living with dementia (2016). This number is expected to increase to two million people in 2030 and four million people in 2050. Along with that high number, the costs incurred by the government to treat the disease are also quite significant.
“In Indonesia, the cost of treating people with dementia is estimated at $2.2 billion every year,” saidDr Kennia.
The high number of people with dementia mainly occurred in developing countries.
Currently, about 60 percent of people with dementia come from low- and middle-income countries. There are many reasons why it happens, one of which is due to the low awareness of dementia and the difficulties to access healthy living.
ALZI, in collaboration with all parties, including embassies around the world, continues to campaign for dementia awareness.
“Alhamdulillah, ALZI Qatar, with the support of the Indonesian Embassy in Doha and the Indonesian people in Qatar, almost every year organises the commemoration of the World Alzheimer’s month,” addedDr kennia.
In addition to holding brain exercises, ALZI Chapter Qatar together with the Indonesian Embassy in Doha will also hold a Webinar or talkshow about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dementia on September 17, 2021.
