The newly opened Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) South Al Wakra Health Center has introduced an innovative method in phlebotomy, the vein viewer machine, to assist in accessing the vein while drawing blood from patients. More than 2,000 patients have registered at the health centre so far, with a capacity of 10,000 expected eventually.
South Al Wakra Health Center Manager Dr Maryam Mohamed Al Dosari told reporters, “The health center has a well-equipped laboratory with a phlebotomy with male and female rooms. The vein viewer is a hi-tech machine used in phlebotomy to view the vein before extracting blood.”
Furthermore, the health center has a radiology unit that performs radiology reports for urgent cases, which are ready and entered into the system within 60 minutes, and routine cases that take two days. “In addition, there is a sonographer who specializes in gynecology and obstetrics cases. It is equipped with a well-designed monitor and a gel warmer to make the service more comfortable for the patient.”
According to her, the catchment area of the South Al Wakra HC is part Zone 90 and about 780 buildings are there. About 2,000 people have so far registered with the health centre who are currently availing the medical services from the health centre. People can register themselves on the link that is available at the PHCC website or can register on site. The HC’s capacity will be 5,000 patients but will gradually increase to 10,000 to 20,000 population. We want to provide them with high -quality service.”
She added that after they register the catchment area, they could move to the second step, which is to start accepting transfers from the Al Wakra and Al Thumama Health Centers.
Dr Al Dosari said that in order to enhance the bond between the youth and the health sector, Type A health centre will involve the youth to participate as health center friends. “The youth will attend the steering committee meeting which is done every 3 months in our health centre. We want them to raise their opinions, suggestions, and meet their expectations as well so that in the near future we can have projects between the health and education sectors.”
She further said that the South Al Wakra HC is one of the central regional health centres and they were one of the 4th health center that was surrounding the south stadium and they were fulfilling the FIFA criteria of having 4 health centres around the expected zone of South Stadium.
She further said that HC is approximately 3,000square metres with 127 car parking spaces with specialized parking for people with special needs offering some facilities that facilitate their service.
“People with special needs also have special access to the pharmacy. We deliver the family medicine service, the integrated clinics composed of family medicine as a specialty, antenatal, postnatal, well baby clinic, dietician and health educator. We are also caring about maternal health counselling and we also have a special counselling for pharmacy.”
According to her, there is also a social worker who performs the continuity of care service in coordination with other sectors like schools. “We have a multi-task room for medical commission, school health and COVID-19 screening.
She added that the facility is also offering a swab for COVID-19 and has a negative pressure isolation room. “There is also a special room where we receive and register the patient and isolate according to the case.”
She said that the health center is offering flu vaccines, a campaign which started on September 1 and urged people to go and get inoculated even if they have taken the COVID-19 vaccine. “There is no problem in taking the flu and COVID-19 vaccines together.
Dr Al Dosari said that the health center was also offering dietician, dental services and people can register for appointments by calling 107 or can go to the health centre to register on site.
The health center also boasts an auditorium that is used for various activities between the staff and the patient in which they also encourage the community to be involved and get their needs met as well as to maintain the patient-centered care.
The HC has 83 professional staff.
