Jakarta: In the absence of the tourists who normally feed them copious amounts of food, monkeys at a park on the Indonesian island of Bali have been reduced to raiding local homes to feed themselves in the manner to which they are accustomed. Visitors usually give the macaques at Sangeh Monkey Forest in Badung bananas and peanuts. But, since the pandemic, during which the popular tourist destination was closed, the now overly tame macaques have relied on food handouts from park staff, said Made Mohon, the sanctuary’s director.  “We still feed them bananas and cassava, but apparently they want snacks from tourists,” Made told dpa.  “Some monkeys have always raided people’s home, but since there have been no visitors who give them fruit and peanuts, more of them have ventured out,” he added. (dpa)
