Data from the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that building permits issued by municipalities in Qatar during the month of July reached 532, a decrease of 28 percent from the previous month of June, which recorded 734 permits.
Data showed a decrease in the number of licenses in most municipalities, with the largest decrease recorded in Al Shamal municipality that recorded a decline of about 54 percent, Al Da’ayen (42 percent), Al Wakrah (39 percent), Al-Rayyan (37 percent), Umm Salal (24 percent), Al Khor (23 percent), while Al Doha municipality recorded an increase of 14 percent and Al Sheehaniya municipality did not witness any significant change last July.
According to geographical distribution, the municipality of Doha comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building permits issued were 145 permits, accounting for 27 percent of the total issued permits, while the municipality of Al Rayyan came in second place with 138 permits (26 percent), followed by Al Da’ayen municipality with 88 permits (17 percent) and municipality of Al Wakrah with 80 permits (15 percent). The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Umm Salal 35 permits (7 percent), Al Khor 24 permits (5 percent), Al Sheehaniya 16 permits (3 percent), and finally Al Shamal 6 permits (1 percent).
In terms of the type of permits issued, data indicates that the new building permits including residential and non-residential constitutes 45 percent (238 permits) of the total building permits issued during the month of July 2021, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 52 percent (274 permits), and fencing permits with 4 percent (20 permits).
As for new residential buildings permits data, villas top the list, accounting for 73 percent (154 permits) of all new residential buildings permits, followed by dwellings of housing loans permits by 15 percent (31 permits) and apartments buildings by 10 percent (21 permits).
Commercial buildings were found to be at the forefront of non-residential buildings permits with 50 percent (14 permits), followed by governmental buildings and mosques with 18 percent (5 permits) each.
With regard to building completion certificates issued during the month of July 2021, the total certificates issued by municipalities amounted to 282 certificates, compared to 347 in June, with a decrease of 19 percent.
This decrease was clearly noted in most of the municipalities with Al Shamal facing a decrease of 83 percent), Al Daayen (59 percent), Um Salal (50 percent), Al Rayyan (15 percent), Doha (6 percent).
On the other hand, there was a clear increase in the municipality of Al Khor (111 percent), Al Sheehaniya (23 percent), Al Wakrah (4 percent).
It is worth mentioning that the release of this monthly data comes under the joint cooperation between the Planning and Statistics Authority and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to make use of the existing electronic link between the two sides.
Building permits and building completion certificates data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.
