Jakarta: Brunei’s top diplomat has been named as ASEAN’s special envoy to Myanmar, to help resolve the political crisis there following a military coup earlier this year, the regional bloc said on Wednesday.
Erywan Yusof, Brunei’s second foreign minister, is tasked with “building trust and confidence with full access” to all parties in Myanmar, according to a joint communique released two days after an ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting.
“We welcomed the appointment by the ASEAN chair for the minister of foreign affairs II of Brunei Darussalam to be the special envoy of the ASEAN chair on Myanmar,” it read.  ASEAN has been criticized for apparent foot-dragging in naming a special envoy to Myanmar. (dpa)
