Qatar’s start hurdler Abderrahman Samba clipped a hurdle during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games men’s 800m hurdles semi-final at the Olympic stadium on Sunday but that wasn’t much of a bother as Samba remained impressive finishing in 47.47secs alongside Brazil’s Alison dos Santos (47.31).
In a prelude to Tuesday’s final, in the other qualifying group world record-holder Karsten Warholm and his US challenger Rai Benjamin met for the first time this year in the semi-finals.
Benjamin (47.37) was leading coming off the final hurdle but Warholm (47.30) ensured that he was in front at the finish line. Both kept something back for the final.
In the men’s 800m, however, there was heartbreak for Nijel Amos of Botswana.
The 2012 silver medallist Amos fell over American Isaiah Jewett who tumbled down in front of him after clipping the edge of the track in the final bend. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico reached the 100m hurdles final with an Olympic record 12.26 seconds and American world record holder Kendra Harrison also qualified.
