The video portal YouTube has blocked the broadcaster Sky News Australia for a week because of its coronavirus coverage.
A YouTube spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday that the broadcaster had been accused of providing false information about the pandemic.
It had a clear and secure policy to prevent the spread of misinformation about Covid-19, it said in a statement. The one-week suspension has been in effect since Thursday.
YouTube did not provide detailed information on the offending content.
According to a report by the British newspaper The Guardian, Sky News Australia had posted numerous videos denying the existence of Covid-19 or encouraging people to take the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine or the anti-worm drug ivermectin against Covid-19.
Sky News Australia assessed the blocking as “a disturbing attack on the ability to think freely.” “Sky News Australia has been temporarily suspended from posting on the Google-owned platform YouTube for publishing opinion content the tech giant disagrees with,” the broadcaster’s site said. Among the videos judged inappropriate, it said, were debates about whether masks were useful or lockdowns justified.
The broadcaster also charged that “YouTube’s approach to policing debate around Covid-19 policies appears arbitrarily focused against conservative voices.” # Notebook
