Istanbul: Seven members of a Kurdish family were murdered on Friday evening in the Turkish region of Central Anatolia, following a series of racist threats.
Attackers broke into the family’s home in the city of Konya and shot seven people aged between 35 and 65. The assailants then started a fire, news agency DHA reported. Ten suspects were subsequently arrested, but no information has yet been released.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who called the crime “cruel” on Saturday, said the murders were carried out due to an 11-year family feud and were not committed with a racial motive.
However, human rights lawyer Eren Keskin tweeted that the family had been subject to racist attacks in the past, adding that some members of the family were seriously injured in an earlier attack in May. At the time, the family told the media that their neighbours had threatened them, saying that they would not tolerate Kurds. (dpa)
