Germany returned to the top of the individual Olympic dressage podium after 25 years on Wednesday at the Tokyo Games with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl beating her famous mentor Isabelle Werth.
The two had helped Germany win a 14th team event title on Tuesday before the 35-year-old von Bredow-Werndl, riding Delara, proved superior over-52-year-old Werth with an all but flawless performance.
The 2012 and 2016 gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin of Britain had to be content with bronze this time around.
“Sometimes I felt like I was doing a bit of a fire dance, on a knife’s edge,” von Bredow-Werndl said.
“But it all worked out. I am super happy.” Werth, the last German winner in the event back in 1996 who coached von Bredow-Werndl for a while in the past, missed drawing level with canoeist Birgit Fischer on a German Olympic record haul.
Fischer remains top with eight gold and four silver, Werth has seven gold and five silver. But the veteran said she is not finished yet: “I still feel young. We will see how long the journey in international and Olympic sport will continue.”
