The vast majority of people who catch coronavirus in Malaysia show mild symptoms or none at all, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday, after reporting another daily case record.
Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the 17,405 people who tested positive on Wednesday, 374 were ill, slightly over 2 percent.
“Another 17,031 cases were from categories 1 [no symptoms] and 2 [mild],” he said.
The ministry reported a record 207 virus-related deaths on Monday and the same number again on Tuesday. Wednesday’s 143 deaths took the overall count to 8,551.
More than 1,000 people are in intensive care units, around half of them on ventilator support, Noor Hisham said.
Over half of Wednesday’s new cases were reported in Kuala Lumpur, the biggest city, and in the neighbouring factory hub of Selangor.
Around 1 in 10 of Wednesday’s record daily caseload had been vaccinated, the director-general said.
The record numbers have come despite over two months of what the government has called “total” lockdown.
Lawmakers convened on Monday for the first time this year, with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin fending off calls to resign over his handling of the pandemic.
