The opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympic Games on Friday will be attended by far fewer visiting dignitaries than usual amid the coronavirus pandemic, a government spokesperson has said. Leading officials from around 15 countries and international organizations are to attend the ceremony with French President Emmanuel Macron among them as France hosts the 2024 Games in Paris. United States first lady Jill Biden will be in Tokyo but there is a drastic reduction from the 40 or so luminaries who attended the opening of the previous Games in Rio de Janeiro five years ago.
