The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Olympic organizers for their coronavirus safety measures and said the Games cannot be judged on the number of cases connected to it. “The Tokyo Olympics should not be judged by the tally of COVID-19 cases that arise because eliminating risk is impossible,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a guest speaker. “The Tokyo Olympics should go ahead to demonstrate to the world what can be achieved with the right plan and measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. “How infections are handled is what matters most.” Tedros stressed, as preliminary competitions began ahead of Friday’s official opening, that organizers had “done their best” to make the Games “as safe as possible.”
