Tunis A rush on coronavirus vaccination centres that required police intervention and resulted in overcrowding and property damage was quickly followed by the dismissal of Tunisia’s health minister on Wednesday.
Faouzi Mehdi had announced on Monday that, in recognition of the Eid al-Adha festival, anyone aged 18 or older could head to any of the country’s 29 vaccination centres on Tuesday and Wednesday for a jab against Covid-19 so long as supplies lasted.
But Tunisians took too enthusiastically to Mehdi’s offer.
Centres were overrun, leading to property damage. Police had to be called in to restore order at several locations.
Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi announced Mehdi’s departure on Wednesday, without giving a specific reason. However, he had seemed distressed on Tuesday as people thronged to the centres. (dpa)
