Dhaka: A radical Islamist militant was executed for carrying out a bomb attack on the office of a secular cultural organization that killed eight people in northern Bangladesh 16 years ago, an official said on Friday.
Asaduzzaman Chowdhury Ponir, 37, was hanged at the Kashimpur High Security Prison outside the capital Dhaka on Thursday night, senior prison official Gias Uddin said.
His body was handed to the relatives for burial hours after he was executed, he added.
The trial court sentenced Ponir and two others to death in 2008 after they were found guilty of planning and carrying out the attack inside the local office of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi cultural organization in northern Netrokona district.
Eight people were killed and dozens others were injured in the attack in December 2005.
