The Embassy of India in Doha, in coordination with the Indian Sports Centre (ISC), celebrated the 7th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2021 on Monday.
Yoga sessions led by expert yoga practitioners were held at six locations across Qatar, including the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park, in front of Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, on the sand dunes of Mesaieed, Asian Town, Al Wakrah, and on Dukhan Beach.
The geographical diversity of Qatar, ranging from beaches of Dukhan to the sand dunes of Mesaieed, made the event picturesque.
The event was held in a hybrid format, limiting the number of attendees in each location in line with the prevailing COVID-19 guidelines. Many more participated in the celebrations virtually.
Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE Dr Deepak Mittal took part in the event at the MIA park. In his opening remarks, he said yoga has the potential to improve physical and mental wellbeing, and provide good health and happiness to all, more so during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The theme of this year’s IDY was ‘Yoga for Wellness’. Some events were held in the run up to the IDY 2021, including online Yoga Challenges for students below 13 years and adults. A quiz contest on yoga was held on social media by posing a question a day. ‘Yogasana of the day’, featuring a resident of Qatar practising yoga, was being shared via the embassy’s social media handles since the beginning of this month.
On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga and on June 21, 2015, the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated worldwide. (TNN)
