Yoga has become a source of strength for people amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday during a virtual address on the occasion of International Yoga Day.
“When Covid emerged, no country was prepared. At this time yoga became a source of inner strength. Yoga helps in self-discipline, it inculcated faith in people that they could fight this virus,” Modi said.
Modi said frontline health workers had told him that they had made yoga a tool in fighting the virus and that experts recommended yoga’s breathing exercises, or pranayama, to strengthen respiratory systems.
Television footage showed ministers in the Modi government doing yoga poses at their homes and security forces and paramilitary personnel practising yoga - some on desert dunes with camels standing by and others on a battleship in the high seas.
In the years before the pandemic Modi and his ministers would lead big yoga events.
India was collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) to launch a mobile app with yoga training videos in different languages, Modi added.
Yoga, an ancient discipline first practised by Hindu sages thousands of years ago, is one of India’s biggest cultural exports, with millions of practitioners worldwide.
