Qatar University’s (QU) Research and Graduate Studies Sector, in cooperation with QU-Health, organised a special discussion session entitled ‘Doctors of Heaven’s Borders: Scientific Achievements for Graduates of the College of Medicine at Qatar University’, which hosted four students from the first batch of the College of Medicine, a member of QU-Health.
The students who participated in the session included Fatima Al-Mohannadi, Qutaiba Obaid, Muhammad Ahmad Badi’ and Mona Saad. It was moderated by Suhad Daher-Nashif, assistant professor of Population Medicine at College of Medicine.
During the programme, the students discussed about their experience in studying medicine at Qatar University, the challenges they faced, support received and the achievements made.
About the transitional stage from being students to doctors, Fatima Al-Mohannadi expressed her mixed feeling of sadness of leaving the college and the happiness that she will be a doctor with a great deal of responsibility and humanity.
On the challenges the students faced during their studies, Qutaiba Obaid said, “The challenges started from the first day of our transition from high school to the university. Everything was different, including the method of teaching, the quality of books and the method of learning. We could overcome these challenges by giving up some luxuries, and observing discipline and perseverance.”
Mona Saad mentioned that one of the most important factors that helped them was the mutual support between the students, the support of the faculty, lecturers and administration, as well as the support of other students from other faculties.
Muhammad mentioned the excellent relationship between students and professors in the college, which contributed to the development of his research through cooperation with his professors.
All the participants spoke about their researches, emphasising the importance of these studies, as they facilitate admission to specialisations and future postgraduate studies.
Fatima Al-Mohannadi pointed out the importance of the student-researcher relationship in dealing with the pressure of studies and research.
In the end, the participants discussed their future plans and the factors that helped them choose their specialities, while providing pieces of advice to medical students in general and students of the College of Medicine in particular.
