French prosecutors have called for a one-year jail sentence for former president Nicolas Sarkozy in a case regarding alleged irregularities with his campaign finances.
Six months of the sentence would be on probation, French news agency AFP reported on Thursday. Sarkozy was also called on to pay a fine of 3,750 euros (4,468 dollars).
Sarkozy was president of France between 2007 and 2012. He is accused of illegal financing of his campaign for his failed re-election in 2012.
Campaign financing in France is limited to ensure equal opportunities among candidates.
At the time of the 2012 election, the spending limit was 22.5 million euros (27.3 million dollars), but Sarkozy’s team is alleged to have spent at least 42.8 million euros on the campaign.
