Afghanistan on Thursday recorded the highest single-day number of new infections and death toll from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The country’s Health Ministry announced that 101 patients had died from the infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 3,943.
In addition, the ministry reported 2,313 new infection cases from a total of 6,092 people tested during the same time frame.
The is the highest number of infections and deaths registered in the country in a single-day as the numbers have been significantly increasing daily for the past two weeks.
The real number of infections and deaths is believed to be much higher, since the country is registering only deaths in hospitals and not those who die at home.
The country with an estimated population of 37 million has so far received 1,668,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines from India, China and the international vaccine-sharing programme COVAX.
To curb the coronavirus’ spread, the government has imposed some restrictions such as the closure of educational centres and wedding halls.
Few people are currently wearing masks in public places. As hospital beds fill up, a lack of oxygen and intensive care unit beds have been reported in the country too.
