New York Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned on Thursday that millions of Syrians are at risk of being without supplies as an important UN resolution on aid deliveries expires next month.
“In July, the UN Security Council should reauthorize cross-border operations into north-west and north-east Syria and grant explicit permission for cross-border aid delivery to those regions,” the HRW said in a statement. Otherwise there is the threat of a “humanitarian calamity,” especially in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
The UN resolution in place since 2014 allows the United Nations to deliver critical aid through border crossings, even to parts of Syria not controlled by the government. After Russian opposition, the number of crossings has dwindled from four to currently one. (dpa)
