Islamabad: Pakistan is taking moves to expand its coronavirus vaccination programme, but fears are growing that millions of Afghan refugees will slip through the cracks because they do not have the necessary local identification required to register for the jab.
The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the body responsible for the country’s response to the pandemic, said on Wednesday that registration for a jab will be open to anyone aged 19 and up. The policy will go into effect on Thursday, Planning Minister Asad Umar said.
Pakistan is getting ready to roll out China’s single-dose CanSino, which Pakistan has been allowed to produce locally.
However, nearly 3 million Afghan refugees are believed to lack the required registration.  Pakistan hosts one of the world’s largest Afghan refugee communities. (dpa)
