Signs of normality began to return in France on Monday as the country lifted some of the harshest coronavirus lockdown measures that have kept people close to home in recent weeks while the medical community sought to fight the pandemic.
One major change will be that people are now no longer required to provide an excuse for travelling more than 10 kilometres from their residence, which means many may start taking trips to other regions.
However, a 7 pm curfew remains in place until mid-May.
Additionally, since children will be expected to return to school in higher grades, families with school-age children won’t be able to do much travelling anyhow.
French President Emmanuel Macron has promised significant relaxations of the lockdown rules. By May 19, he said, all restaurants with outdoor dining, as well as stores and cultural attractions, should reopen. At that point, the curfew will be pushed back to 9 pm.
