Iran cancelled its annual anti-Israel Al-Quds Day demonstrations for a second year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Because of the new coronavirus wave in the country, there will be no Quds rallies this year either, even in the form of motorcades,” Nosratollah Lotfi, deputy head of the Islamic Development Coordination Council, told the Fars News Agency on Tuesday.
Iran traditionally marks Al-Quds Day - Al-Qud is the Arabic word for Jerusalem - on the final Friday of Ramadan to protest Israel’s 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem. This year the day falls on May 7. Iran does not recognize Israel and considers its government the root of all problems in the region.
Due to the rapidly rising numbers of new coronavirus infections and deaths in Iran, last week the government imposed a strict nationwide lockdown nationwide.
