Russian dissident Alexei Navalny is in “satisfactory” condition, but has been moved to a prison hospital, the country’s prisons authority reported on Monday.
“Alexei Navalny’s health condition is considered to be satisfactory.
A general practitioner examines him every day,” the federal penitentiary authority said in a statement.
“The patient has given his consent that vitamins be prescribed to him,” the statement read, adding that the hospital where he was moved is specialised in “dynamic observation of such patients.”
Navalny’s personal doctor, Anastasia Vasilyeva, contradicted the authorities via Twitter. She said Navalny had not been taken to a hospital, but to another prison camp, where prisoners suffering from tuberculosis could also be treated.
“This is not at all a hospital where they can diagnose treatment for his problems,” she wrote.
His team also contradicted the authorities and said Navalny had simply been moved to another prison camp, and not to a hospital.
Amnesty International said that independent doctors could not see Navalny even after his transfer and that he needed help urgently.
Navalny has been on hunger strike for almost three weeks, to protest the lack of medical care in the prison camp. His team has repeatedly sounded alarms about his deteriorating health.
During the weekend, his team said Navalny’s state of health was concerning and issued an urgent warning of impending cardiac arrest due to critical potassium levels in his blood.
The opposition politician himself recently complained of back problems, paralysis in his limbs, fever and cough.
Vasilyeva demanded again on Monday that she be allowed to examine Navalny in the prison camp.
On Sunday, the United States, the European Union, Germany and others urged the Russian leadership to provide adequate medical treatment to Navalny. Washington also threatened consequences should the 44-year-old die in jail.
However, the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said on Monday that there were no moves towards placing more sanctions on Russia for now.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that Navalny had been brought up during EU discussions and that the bloc was monitoring the situation closely to see if he was indeed receiving proper care.
