Because of the persecution of the Muslim minority Uighurs, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch has called on the international community to impose tougher sanctions on China.  In a report published on Monday on the human rights situation in the Xinjiang region, where most of the Chinese Uighurs live, the organization accused China’s government of “crimes against humanity”, which should be punished accordingly.  Among other things, the Chinese leadership is responsible for “widespread and systematic policies of mass detention, torture, and cultural persecution, among other offences.” “Coordinated international action is needed to sanction those responsible, advance accountability, and press the Chinese government to reverse course,” Human Rights Watch urged.
It also called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to further investigate the allegations.  The report submitted by Human Rights Watch documents, among other things, cases of arbitrary mass arrests, torture and forced labour.
It also speaks of mass surveillance, “cultural and religious erasure” and sexual violence.  “It is increasingly clear that a coordinated global response is needed to end China’s crimes against humanity against Turkic Muslims,” said Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch.
