Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists his side will not sit back on their 2-1 advantage from last week’s first encounter with Borussia Dortmund.
City face the German side in the second leg of their quarter-final at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.
“We are looking forward. Many things can happen, nothing is guaranteed. We had a good result, we don’t defend, everything to win,” Guardiola said.
City have been beaten in the quarter-finals in each of the past three seasons and have not reached the last four since 2016.
But they are keen to take the next step after their frustrations of recent seasons.
“Now is the time to make another step, everyone wants it. The players first because they were sad when we were not able to go to the semi-finals.
“Tomorrow is another opportunity to prove ourselves. Nobody is going to give it to us - we have to win it, we have to do it,” Guardiola said.
Ilkay Guendogan has warned of the quality of Dortmund ahead of the return clash against his former club.
“I wasn’t surprised. I still follow them a lot and watch as many games as possible,” he said.
“I know they have a lot of quality in the squad and individually with amazing, fast players. I know they can beat, on a good day, every good team in Europe.”
Reus and Hummels
doubtful, Sancho out
for Dortmund
In a blow to Borussia Dortmund’s plans defender Mats Hummels and captain Marco Reus are doubtful against Manchester City while winger Jadon Sancho is out.
“We’ll have to wait and see who can make it,” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic told a news conference on Tuesday, referring to the training sessions still to take place before the match.
Both Hummels and Reus were subbed with injuries in the 3-2 win over VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga last Saturday.
“Both have a lot of experience in the Champions League. It would help us a lot if they were on the pitch,” Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji said. The German club lost the first leg 2-1 in Manchester.
Sancho will certainly be missing the game. After recovering from a muscle injury, he has returned to training, but isn’t ready to play.
“He’s back on target and really pushing hard, but he isn’t yet an option.
“It’s important that he stays with us for a long time and doesn’t come back quickly now to be out for a long time again,” Terzic said.
Despite Sancho’s absence, Terzic hopes Dortmund will reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2013.
“That would be an unbelievable story when you see how the whole season has gone. We want to show that we can maybe eliminate the best team in this competition,” he said.
