Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros. Co. W.L.L. (AAB), the exclusive Toyota and Lexus distributor in Qatar, concluded the AAB Chess Open U-16 in collaboration with Qatar Chess Federation (QCF), crowning Abdulla Al Homaid, Qatar national player, as the champion.
Out of 175 chess enthusiasts, the top four players are all under 16 years age who competed for the championship title via the remote play system on the lichess.org website.
The Rapid chess system was used for the Finals, which were held in two rounds of 10 minutes + 5 seconds for each move.
The matches were filled with excitement and intensity, as all confrontations were resolved only through the deciding match. In the end, Al Homaid proved to be the most formidable competitor.
Taksh Sharma (IND) was named first runner-up, Sivaganesh Muthupandi (IND) was named second runner-up, and Abhyudit Singh (IND) finished as third runner-up.
The winners received not only trophies and cash prizes, but also the distinction of being the first set of AAB Chess Open U16 winners.
Before the start of the game, a technical meeting was held with all of the Top 4 in the presence of QCF President, Mohammed Al Mudahka; Chief Arbiter, Freyd Laurent (FRA); Tournament Director, Hussain Aziz, and Rassa Ramli, Corporate Communication & CSR Manager (AAB), which was monitored online from the Lexus Showroom and was shown on live stream by Qatar Streaming.
The awarding ceremony was held virtually to adhere to health and safety protocols. Following the results, the parents received trophies and prizes, which were then presented to the winners during the online ceremony.
AAB’s strong commitment to promoting chess among youth to help them develop strategic thinking skills has resulted in a variety of formats and platforms, beginning with AAB Kids’ Chess ten years ago.
This tournament advanced to the first FIDE Rated Tournament and the Stay Home Online Chess Open editions, which promoted the game in the midst of social distancing measures.
All of these events were a success due to AAB’s strong partnership with QCF in terms of creating and developing a new generation of chess players in the country.
The AAB Chess Open U16 is AAB’s corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at youth development through sports.
