Qatar University’s (QU) College of Health Sciences Student Association (CHSSA) hosted the first-ever university-level ‘Recording Health’ competition using the Webex platform.
This competition started in August of last year and ended on April 3 with three winners. The contestant was required to create a short video for the health field, which he or she chose. One of the competition’s most prominent goals was to foster students’ creative abilities in the scientific field, as well as to deliver difficult scientific content to all segments of society in a simple and enjoyable manner. The competition was held in stages, and it also included a content-creation and editing workshop to assist the participants.
The competition’s concept stems from the ways in which health workers assist the community. Because some medical topics are difficult and complex, it was necessary to simplify the content and place it in a simple and fun template that would appeal to people of all ages.
The competition began with 15 contestants divided into eight groups, each of whom was asked to create two videos. The first shot includes 30 seconds of explanation, while the second shot is three minutes long and includes detailed but simplified explanations of scientific material.
The teaser video was shown on the League’s Instagram account to encourage viewers to vote for the top six videos to advance to the second stage. The original video was shown at the closing ceremony to the jury on the Webex platform, whose vote accounts for 80 percent of the total winning percentage, while the audience vote on the day of the event accounts for 20 percent of the winning percentage.
The competition saw fierce competition among the participants and ended with three videos for first place, with the winners being honored. Certificates were given to all participants as well as the jury.
Jawaher Al Emadi, president of the College of Health Sciences Student Association (CHSSA), expressed her delight at the completion of this competition, which aimed to achieve a healthier and more effective university life through innovative awareness-raising.
“The difficulty in understanding scientific contents always lies in the method of its delivery to individuals,” said Asma Hassan, vice-president of CHSSA. As a result, new methods of communicating scientific materials to the general public in a simple manner were required.”
The association expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Hanan Abdel-Rahim, dean of the College of Health Sciences, for her unwavering support and faith in her students. Special thanks also go to the jury, which was represented by Dr Nour Majbour, assistant dean, College of Pharmacy at Qatar University and Dr Alaa Al Owaisi, head of the Human Nutrition Department at Qatar University. Dr Abdul Rahman Al Jamal is a biomedical science laboratory technologist at Qatar University.
