Team Qatar won the International Schools Debating Championship in Arabic, organised by the QatarDebate Center, a member of Qatar Foundation, which concluded on Wednesday in its virtual version.
Team Oman came in the second place after competing against Qatar for the championship title in the case: ‘This Council Will Stop Fuel Subsidies’.
Team Turkey won the international championship in Arabic for non-native speakers after competing against Team Malaysia which came in the second place.
Team Philippines was crowned winner of the International Schools Debating Championship in English. The team competed against Team South Africa for the championship title on the issue: ‘This council sees that post-colonial countries should not form national identities around resistance against their colonial masters’.
The final round took place during the closing ceremony, in the presence of a large international audience.
The best speakers of the championship were also announced at the closing ceremony. The championships best speaker is Fatima Mansour Alqarashi from Kuwait, followed by Moza Khalid Al Hajri from Qatar in the second place and Abdullah Jassem Al Kubaisi from Qatar in the third place.
The best Arabic speakers in the championship for non-native speakers are Amir Marouf Chatir from Turkey who won the first place, followed by Siti Nour Fatima Abdul Rashid from Singapore in the second place and Amir Pratt Director from Turkey in the third place.
Winners of the championship for the best English speakers are Phong Nguyen from Vietnam in first place, Jia-Han B Fam from Vietnam in the second place, and Joseph Zelicek Nyak from South Africa in the third place.
Commenting on the occasion, Dr Hayat Maarafi, executive director of the QatarDebate Center, said: “Today we concluded the first virtual international championship hosted by the QatarDebate Center under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. And it is only the beginning of developing educational strategies that adopt advanced methods in practising meaningful dialogue and substantive discussion, regardless of the circumstances.”
Dr Hayat praised the championship days that were filled with fun, learning, competition, breaking time barriers and distance, noting that the championship aligned with Qatar’s vision of sustainability and addressing environmental changes facing the world.
Team Qatar which won the championship comprised Moza Khaled Al Hajri, Abdullah Jassim Al Kubaisi - Muhammad Abdul Aziz Al Emadi - Asmahan Abdul Aziz Al Kuwari, and Al-Jawhara Abdul Rahman Al Shammari.
The jury in the championship included Dhaifallah Al Subhi from Saudi Arabia as president, with the membership of Abeer Majrouh from Tunisia, Farah Al Harbi from Kuwait, Abeer Al Sadiq from Sudan, Mohammad Ekamal from Malaysia, Yunus Al Jabari from Turkey and Ali Al Jumaili from Yemen.
