Cairo: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi on Wednesday said “all options are open” in his country’s long-standing dispute with Ethiopia over a Nile dam, which Cairo fears will reduce its supply of water.
Ethiopia began building the 4.8-billion-dollar hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, one of the Nile’s major tributaries, in 2011, raising concerns in the two downstream countries, Egypt and Sudan.
A decade of arduous talks involving the three countries has reached a deadlock.
“I tell the Ethiopian brothers that we should not reach the point where they touch a drop of water from Egypt because all options are open,” he said.“Cooperation is better. Joining hands and building together is far better than if we disagree and tussle,” he added. (dpa)
