Mexico has authorised the emergency use of a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Indian pharmaceutical firm Bharat Biotech, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday.
With the latest approval of Covaxin, Mexico now has six authorized Covid-19 jabs, Ebrard said.
Vaccines developed by AstraZeneca, Pfizer, the Russian-made Sputnik V and the jabs developed by Chinese companies CanSino and Sinovac have previously been authorized by Mexico’s Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
“Very timely decision by COFEPRIS to authorize the emergency use of COVAXINE vaccine manufactured in India. The options for vaccination against COVID-19 in Mexico are expanded,” Ebrard tweeted.
Bharat Biotech has said that its Covid-19 vaccine showed 81-per-cent efficacy in preventing Covid-19 “in those without prior infection after the second dose,” citing an interim analysis of stage-three trials.
Mexico was the first country in Latin America to start its vaccination campaign at Christmas. So far, however, just 1.3 million people have been fully vaccinated out of a population of some
127 million.
