A fourth wave of the coronavirus is in full effect in Iran, with 193 deaths and 21,954 new infections recorded within 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry in Tehran on Wednesday. Since the pandemic began last February, more than 2 million people have been infected and more than 63,000 have died from virus-related causes, said ministry spokesperson Sima Lari on state television.
The dramatic rise in cases leads directly back to an easing of rules for the two-week Persian New Year celebrations from March 21 to April 2, during which time many Iranians travelled domestically and abroad, and did not adhere to rules meant to stop the virus’ spread.
Now, tougher measures are to enter into force again. Many sectors of the economy will close down, and bazaars and shopping malls will close for at least a week. A mass vaccination campaign for Iran’s 83 million people is planned for September. More vaccines will be introduced by then, and vaccines produced in Iran are also to be used after the end of test phases.
