Elite Paper Recycling Company has been collecting more than 140 tonnes of waste paper each day, accounting for almost 90 percent of the paper waste generated each day in Qatar, according to Chairman Abdalla Al Suwaidi.
The paper is collected from supermarkets, hypermarkets, ministries, schools, homes and neighbourhoods. The company has 2,500 dumpsters who specialise in paper and cartons, Al Suwaidi said.
Speaking to the media, Al Suwaidi said the process of recycling goes on round the clock. “There are no chemicals involved in the recycling process. Water is used and it gets reused.”
According to him, the blockade helped the company as they were able to supply egg trays across Qatar. He added that the company started making corrugation boxes in the beginning of COVID-19 which helped in enabling home deliveries. “We have an agreement with Lulu and ‘talabat’ to supply cartons.”
The recycled paper is also exported to several countries such as Kuwait, Oman, Bangladesh, Srilanka, China, Tanzania and Sudan.
Talking about the company’s contribution to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Al Suwaidi said they were working with FIFA and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy to segregate all the waste paper from the stadiums.
Al Suwaidi started the Elite Recycling Company in 2012 when he was 16, however, the company started production a few years later. “I wanted to do something when I grew up to help the future and the environment. That’s when I thought of a paper recycling company.”
He believes he has inspired a lot of people. “People get encouraged to start business and do something for the community. We have many people from universities who have started their own initiatives to go green and do recycling to save the environment. It has major impact on the community.”
He said the greatest support for him came from his family. “They told me to go after what I wanted. You need to have a back-up from your family and friends which gives your confidence and motivation to move forward.” Encouraging people to consider recycling, he said, “You need to think of the future. If we use all of our natural resources, we will lose our planet. So, instead of using our forests and plants, we have to recycle our waste paper instead.”
Al Suwaidi said he is happy that the company has created a lot of jobs and has over 350 employees. “Each employee supports about 10 people through his salary. Therefore, more than 3,500 people are living out of this company.”
