The worldwide release of Malayalam film ‘The Priest’ on Thursday (March 11) marks the film-distribution debut of Doha-based Truth Global Films (TGF).
TGF is the first Doha-based company to have won the overseas distribution rights of an Indian film, its chairman Abdul Samad said, adding that the film — which brings Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Manju Warrier together on silver screen for the first time — would be released in 16 theatres in Qatar.
In the GCC, The Priest will be released in 108 theatres, a record for a Malayalam film, despite the cinemas being shut in Bahrain and Kuwait due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Samad said. This, according to him, is also the third biggest release for an Indian film in the GCC.
To celebrate the Qatar release of The Priest — the first Malayalam film under a major banner to come to Qatar after the outbreak — a special screening for Indian film producers and community leaders is being organised by TGF, Qatar Mammootty Fans and Welfare Association, and Radio Malayalam 98.6 FM on Thursday evening.
Being billed a mystery thriller, The Priest is directed by debutant Jofin T Chacko and is based on a story by him. The script and dialogues are written by Deepu Pradeep and Shyam Menon, and the film is produced by B Unnikrishnan and Anto Joseph.
The first-look poster shows Mammootty’s title character in a hooded cassock against the backdrop of a church and the film features original score and soundtrack composed and produced by Rahul Raj.
“‘The Priest’ is a start for Truth Global Films,” said Samad. It has struck overseas distribution deals with five other Malayalam film, including social drama ‘Varthamanam’, starring Parvathy Thiruvothu and Roshan Mathew.
