The Israeli authorities have officially started COVID-19 vaccinations of Palestinians who have a work permit for Israel and the West Bank settlements.
Vaccination stations have been set up at several checkpoints for this purpose.
“[The measure is] in our common health and economic interest, as we live in a single epidemiological region,” said the head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Major General Kamil Abu Rukun, according to a statement on Monday.
Some 100,000 Palestinians hold work permits for Israel. Many of them work in construction. Those willing to be vaccinated could make appointments through their Israeli employers. About 4 million people live in the West Bank. There has been very little vaccination there so far, and ordered supplies have not arrived.
The distribution of the first vaccine doses by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to footballers and ministers, among others, caused anger.
In Israel, about 5 million people have received a first vaccination so far.
