Libya’s divided parliament is scheduled to meet on Monday for a confidence vote on an interim unity government to lead the conflict-torn country to long-delayed elections, lawmakers said.
The meeting is to be held in the Libyan coastal city of Sirte.
Last month, delegates from Libya’s rival factions elected Abdul-Hamid Mohammed Dbeibeh as interim premier and Mohammed Menfi as head of a three-person Presidency Council in a UN-hosted process in Switzerland.
Earlier this week, Dbeibeh said he had sent his proposed line-up to parliament ahead of the confidence vote.
Lawmaker Jalal al-Shouheidi, who plans to attend the voting session, said he expected the quorum needed for the meeting - 98 of the 188-member legislature - would be met.
“According to information available, all preparations are in place to hold the session,” he told dpa.
He expected the parliament to discuss the proposed membership of the Cabinet on Monday and to vote the following day.
The line-up includes 27 ministers and six state ministers, according to Dbeibeh’s media office.
The interim administration will replace the UN-backed Government of National Accord, which has been in charge of Tripoli and western areas, and the competing eastern administration linked with warlord Khalifa Haftar.
A Sirte official on Sunday said the city was ready for the meeting due to be held in a convention centre.
“The security situation in Sirte is good and favourable for holding the session,” city spokesman Mohammed al-Ameel told dpa without elaborating.
Libya’s elected legislature is divided between two assemblies: one in the eastern city of Tobruk and the other in Tripoli.
The UN envoy for Libya, Jan Kubis, called Monday’s meeting an “important step” for Libya.
“This session ... is another important step towards restoring the unity and legitimacy of Libya’s institutions and authorities, in order to achieve the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Libya,” Kubis said.
