A British-Iranian citizen serving a prison sentence for espionage was released after completing five years in prison and can now rejoin her family, her lawyer said.
Lawyer Hojjat Kermani told the ISNA news agency on Sunday that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was let out of the infamous Evin prison in Tehran.
However, British opposition Labour lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, who represents Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s London constituency, said that Zaghari-Ratcliffe was summoned again to court next Sunday.
Siddiq added that her ankle tag had been removed and she was going to see her grandmother, the Press Association reported.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called for Zaghari-Ratcliffe to be allowed to return to Britain as soon as possible.
“We welcome the removal of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s ankle tag, but Iran’s continued treatment of her is intolerable,” he said on Twitter.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested in 2016 after visiting her parents in Iran and sentenced to five years in prison for espionage and other offences. She was also accused of working with a foreign network to topple the Iranian government.
She has denied all charges, saying she only had wanted to visit her parents.
Her imprisonment led to a diplomatic crisis between Britain and Iran.
Efforts by British diplomats to give her consular support were thwarted as Iran does not recognize dual national status.
