US House passes police reforms sparked by death of George Floyd Mar 05, 2021 0 727 12345 dpa WashingtonThe US House of Representatives passed a comprehensive police reform bill on Wednesday, more than nine months after the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of police.A majority in the Democratic-led House approved the bill, with 220 lawmakers voting in favour and 212 against.Among other things, the draft law named after Floyd stipulates that the federal government should create incentives for banning chokeholds and carotid holds during police operations.Floyd died in May last year after a police officer in Minneapolis pinned him to the ground with his knee for nearly nine minutes. The proposed act, which originally was passed by the House following Floyd’s death before stalling in the Senate - also would see police officers’ immunity being restricted in order to facilitate prosecution in the event of the use of force. The bill, supported by US President Joe Biden, will next be back in the Senate. It remains to be seen whether it can get a majority there.“To make our communities safer, we must begin by rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the people they are entrusted to serve and protect,” the White House said in a statement.“We cannot rebuild that trust if we do not hold police officers accountable for abuses of power and tackle systemic misconduct - and systemic racism - in police departments.” Pages 12 RELATED ARTICLES EU uses export ban for first time on COVID-19 shots leaving Italy Mar 05, 2021 0 444 Germany OKs AstraZeneca jab as govt vows vaccine, testing boost Mar 05, 2021 0 41 US House cancels Thursday session after police warn of Capitol plot Mar 05, 2021 0 42 Powerful quake shakes New Zealand cities; tsunami warning lifted dpa Wellington A powerful earthquake measured at a magnitude of over 7 has struck off the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, shaking residents as far away as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
