The Shura Council, at its regular weekly meeting held via video conference on Monday under the chairmanship of Speaker HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud on Monday, discussed the report of the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee on a draft law on endowment (Waqf).
The draft law includes nine chapters and 58 articles and involves provisions related to the establishment of the endowment, its distributions and conditions, the civil endowment and the supervision of the endowment, its maintenance, architecture and investment.
The draft law comes to replace Law No 8 of 1996 regarding endowment, in the framework of updating legislations to keep pace with developments in this regard.
After an extensive discussion on the committee’s report, the Council decided to approve the draft law and to refer its recommendations to the government.
Meanwhile, the Shura Council participated on Monday in the third meeting of the GCC-European Parliamentary Committee, which was held via videoconferencing.
The meeting discussed several topics suggested by a number of legislative councils in the GCC countries, particularly on the parliamentary dialogue between the European Union (EU) and the GCC countries on energy reduction and transformation, as well as the issue of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy and environment fields, and opportunities for mutual benefit from the experiences of the Gulf and European sides.
The meeting also discussed cooperation between GCC countries and the EU to facilitate the provision of medical supplies to be prepared for future pandemic, in addition to the scientific cooperation between the Council and Union’s countries in desalination technologies.
During the meeting, the Shura Council was represented by Nasser bin Khalil Al Jaidah and Reem bint Mohammed Al Mansouri.
