It is obvious that Iran was behind the attack on an Israeli freighter in the Gulf of Oman last week, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.
In an interview with the broadcaster Kan, Netanyahu took the opportunity to reiterate that Israel will never allow Iran to become a nuclear-armed power.
Iran rejected Israel’s accusations.
“We will not allow the Zionists [Israel] to sow unrest and panic in the region with baseless accusations,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh told state television.
Khatibzadeh added that not Iran but Israel was a factor of insecurity in the region.
According to media reports, the interview with Netanyahu was recorded on Sunday, which means the comments were made before a Syrian rocket attack on Israeli military forces. Israel regularly targets pro-Iranian militias in Syria to contain Tehran’s influence in the war-torn country.
Friday’s blast on the tanker was the latest in a series of incidents involving vessels in the Gulf of Oman. Two tankers suffered damage in 2019, with Iran also suspected to be behind the attacks. Tehran has denied the allegations.
After an Iranian nuclear physicist was killed in an attack in November, Israel has been expecting possible retaliation. Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said it was known that Iran was targeting Israeli infrastructure and citizens.
