Kinshasa: Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on Tuesday sent a team of investigators to eastern North-Kivu province to search for the killers of Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio. The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, his bodyguard and a driver were killed on Monday when their humanitarian convoy was ambushed by unknown armed men while travelling in a volatile part of the country. Attanasio was part of a UN World Food Programme (WFP) field trip to a school project in Rutshuru, near Virunga National Park in North Kivu, an area frequented by various rebel groups. The Congolese government initially accused Hutu rebels from neighbouring Rwanda of the crime, but the Democratic Forces of the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) denied any involvement in the attack. (dpa)
