The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event will kick off for the eighth time with the US$5,000 Doha Beach Volleyball Cup at the Al Gharafa Beach Complex from Tuesday (Feb 23-26).
The Qatar pairing of Cherif Younousse Samba and Ahmed Tijan will be seeking their second medal in the Qatari capital after placing third in the March 2018 Katara Beach Volleyball Cup after defeating Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in the bronze medal match.
The Doha Beach Volleyball Cup is the first 1-star men’s-only tournament of two World Tour events in Qatar this season with the $300,000 Katara Beach Volleyball Cup set for March 8-12 for both men and women.
The local organizing committee of Qatar Volleyball Association has implemented preparation policies ahead of the start of the competition from Monday until Friday.
Doha began to welcome teams participating in the tournament including those from Lebanon, Poland, Russia and the USA, as those teams entered the medical bubble allocated at the Ezdan Hotel West Bay, in preparation for the tournament.
The teams received a warm welcome upon their arrival at Hamad International Airport, where the medical swab tests were conducted in line with the health safety policy to limit the spread of COVID-19 and then went directly to the residence hotel, where teams entered the “health bubble” until the end of their participation in the World Tour 1-Star event.
The precautionary measures as per the Ministry of Public Health precautionary measures against new coronavirus (COVID-19) have been applied.
A total of 24 teams from 14 countries will be in the field on Tuesday.
Four pairs will advance to the main draw from the qualification rounds.
Following Tuesday’s qualifiers, the 16-team main draw for the Doha Beach Volleyball Cup begins with pool play on Wednesday.
The top three finishers in each of the four groups will advance to the elimination bracket where two rounds will be played on Thursday.
Friday’s schedule features the semifinal and medal matches.
Led by Cherif and Ahmed, the 13th ranked team on the FIVB World Tour, host Qatar has entered seven teams into the event.
Other countries entered in the Doha Beach Volleyball Cup are Brazil (1 entry), Canada (1), Egypt (1), Gambia (1), Israel (2), Lebanon (1), Morocco (1), Oman (2), Poland (4), Russia (5), Switzerland (1), Tunisia (1), Turkey (2), United States (1) and Venezuela (2).
Eleven of the teams in the Doha Beach Volleyball Cup are ranked on the FIVB World Tour list led by Qatar’s Cherif and Ahmed. With three World Tour medals to their credit in 29 FIVB starts together, Cherif and Ahmed are ranked 13th internationally.
Six other teams in the Doha Beach Volleyball Cup field have FIVB medals to their credit, including Anton Kislytsyn/Daniil Kuvichka and Alexey Gusev/Pavel Shustrov of Russia, Yves Haussener/Quentin Metral of Switzerland, Murat Giginoglu/Volkan Gogtepe and Selcuk Sekerci/Sefa Urlu of Turkey and Travis Mewhirter/Adam Roberts of the United States.
Also competing in the Doha Beach Volleyball Cup are Jackson Henriquez and Jesus Villafane of Venezuela, who competed in one World Tour event together since their last full season on the international circuit in 2016.
Henriquez and Villafane will start play in the qualifier on Tuesday as all five FIVB confederations are scheduled to have teams competing in the event – Asia (Lebanon, Oman, Qatar), Africa (Gambia, Egypt, Morocco), Europe (Poland, Russia, Switzerland), NORCECA (Canada and the United States) and South America (Venezuela).
The last World Tour event was played this past September in Lithuania where teams from Estonia (Kusti Nolvak Mart Tiisaar) and Italy (Margherita Bianchin/Claudia Scampoli) topped the men’s and women’s podiums, respectively.
