New Delhi: - An Indian Maoist ideologue and activist who has been in jail for over two years in a caste violence case that has grabbed global attention was granted bail by a court on medical grounds on Monday. Varavara Rao, 81, was consistently denied bail despite several attempts by his lawyers who argued he spent around 150 days in hospital in the past year. The Bombay High Court granted Rao bail for six months on medical grounds on the condition that will remain in the city and be available for investigation whenever required, legal news portal Live Law reported. Rao and other activists have been in custody awaiting trial under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) since August 28 2018, a stringent anti-terrorism law. (dpa)
