Washington: More than two-thirds of people surveyed want US President Donald Trump to cease being a major public figure once he leaves office next week, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.
Trump’s job approval rating has hit a personal nadir, coming in at just 29 per cent, as even his supporters increasingly say they are unhappy with his conduct since the November election.
There is narrow support for removing Trump from office before his term ends on January 20.
The sharp drop in ratings come following the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6 that left several people dead, including at least one police officer. Trump has since been impeached by the House of Representatives for inciting an insurrection. Only about a quarter of those surveyed in the Pew poll say the Republican president does not bear some responsibility for the violence.
He spoke at the rally just prior to the mob attack, using fiery rhetoric to push the unfounded claim that the election was fraudulent.
In sharp contrast voters seem pleased with how President-elect Joe Biden has handled things since November, with 64 per cent of those surveyed saying they had a positive opinion of his conduct over the past two months. The survey was conducted over four days starting January 8, just after the riot in Washington. (dpa)
