Indonesia is home to the famous tourist island Bali, over a hundred active volcanoes, many breathtaking temples, the largest and heaviest lizards in the world called komodo dragon and the beloved dish Nasi Goreng.
The world’s largest island country takes pride of its rich culture and traditions as well as its friendly, polite and passionate people.
In Qatar, the diversity of the nation that earned the monicker ‘The Emerald of the Equator’ is proudly represented by its strong community.
Did you know there are about 64 Indonesian groups in Qatar? These groups include professional affiliations, hobbies, general interests, employment at particular companies, and socio-religious interests. There is also a group of passionate cyclists, nurses, college students, among others.
They are well-represented by the umbrella organisation known as the Indonesian Community Association in Qatar or PERMIQA. Established in August 2001, PERMIQA’s objectives are to facilitate interactions and communications among these various groups and to help ensure the wellbeing of Indonesians in Qatar.
“PERMIQA has hundreds of active members who belong to different groups. The organisation works closely with the Indonesian Embassy in Qatar in promoting our country and showcasing Indonesian culture, culinary, social, sporting, and business activities,” Ahmad Syarnubi Fatah, the current PERMIQA President, told Qatar Tribune in an interview.
PERMIQA’s flagship projects held typically in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Doha includes commemorating events of national importance such as the Indonesian Independence Day which falls on
August 17, Indonesian Youth Pledge Day on October 28 and Indonesian Mother’s Day on December 22.
Syarnubi said, “PERMIQA has also been working closely with the Indonesian Embassy to provide labour advices and assistance for those who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, to boost the presence and contribution of the Indonesian community in Qatar, PERMIQA holds sporting events such as football tournaments among junior and senior footballers, workshops on health and webinars on a variety of topics. PERMIQA also has several initiatives to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 and the 2023 Qatar-Indonesia Year
of Culture”
Further on the other milestones of PERMIQA, he also stressed the organisation’s commitment to promote Indonesian culture and tourism through working with Indonesian dance troupes and musicians to participate cultural events such as the the “Wonderful Indonesia: Unity in Diversity” event held at Katara Cultural Village Foundation.
“PERMIQA also supported one of the Indonesian Embassy programmes to showcase Indonesian coffee during Indonesia Coffee Week held at Landmark Mall in December 2019. With Qatar Charity, PERMIQA distributed Qurbani meat to deserving people in Al-Khor, Doha, Dukhan, Zekreet, Messaieed and Wakrah after Eid al Adha in 2020,” he added.
During this time of pandemic, PERMIQA is also actively working closely with the Indonesian Embassy to regularly hold virtual meetings to inform the Indonesian communities about the latest development of the COVID-19 pandemic situations and handling both in Qatar and in Indonesia. Speakers include an Indonesian diplomat in charge of the Covid-19 Response Task Force and Indonesian doctors who work in Qatar.
Last year, the organisation has also held several webinars such as a webinar on high school and college scholarship opportunities with the Indonesian Society for Petroleum Engineer and Experts Qatar Chapter and another webinar focused on the role of Indonesian diaspora in the 21st century.
On the organisation’s planned activities for the new year, he said, “PERMIQA and the Indonesian Embassy plan to hold workshops teaching members of the Indonesian communities the Indonesian language, Indonesian traditional dances, Indonesian music and songs. PERMIQA also hopes to continue commemorating events of national importance virtually.”
Syarnubi assumed the leadership of PERMIQA when he was elected by the community in July 2020. Born in South Sumatra, he currently works QAFCO as a Senior Process Operator. He has been living in Qatar since 2002 with his wife and three children. His hobbies include playing badminton, football, volley ball, cycling, and fishing.
“My fellow PERMIQA officers, I hope that we can increase PERMIQA’s functions to bring the greatest benefits for the Indonesian communities in Qatar and for the host country as well. We hope to realise the many potentials of the Indonesian communities living, working, and studying in Qatar,” the leader said.
